Proverbs 1:7 lays the foundation for true knowledge— the reverent fear of the Lord. The term “fear” here encompasses awe, respect, and a humble recognition of God’s supremacy. In a world where knowledge is often pursued through various means, this verse redirects our focus to the fundamental importance of acknowledging God’s sovereignty. It challenges us to cultivate a teachable spirit, understanding that genuine wisdom starts with the fear of the Lord.

Furthermore, Proverbs 1:7 contrasts the wise, who embrace the fear of the Lord and seek wisdom, with fools who reject wisdom and despise instruction. As we reflect on this scripture, let us examine our hearts. Are we embracing the fear of the Lord as the foundation of our knowledge? Or are we, in our pride, rejecting the wisdom God offers? The Third Sunday of Lent beckons us to surrender our hearts to the fear of the Lord, recognizing that in this surrender, true knowledge begins.

Prayer:

Holy God, grant us a reverence for your majesty that leads to true knowledge. May we humbly embrace your wisdom and instruction, recognizing that in fearing you, we find the path to genuine understanding. As we journey through this Lenten season, may our hearts be continually turned towards you, the source of all wisdom. Amen.
